More than 7,500 participants from all over Malaysia and from as far as Japan, Korea, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Philippines laced-up their running shoes on an early Sunday morning and converged at Dataran Centrio in Seremban 2 for the IJM Land Half Marathon 2017. Now in its sixth year, the annual event continues to attract a strong participation and interest among the running community in Seremban 2 vicinity and its surrounding neighbourhoods, eclipsing the previous record of 6,000 participants in 2016.

An active advocate of healthy living and positive lifestyle, IJM Land is constantly involved in conceiving, organising and contributing to community sports events that are community-oriented and family-friendly; dedicated to inspire and motivate people to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle and to bond communities through sports such as running in Malaysia.

We set out from the very start to make this event not just a platform for runners but to reinforce community bonds and bring people from all walks of life together to enjoy sports, exemplifying our tagline “Run Together, Bond Stronger”, said Mr Edward Chong, Managing Director of IJM Land Berhad.

“It is also encouraging to note that IJM Land Half Marathon is recognised internationally; we are pleased to see participants not only from Malaysia but also from all over the world running with us and creating amazing bonds with other runners. The overwhelming response is testament to

the success and growing popularity of the event to inspire people from all walks of life and across generations to lead an active lifestyle”

‘Run Together, Bond Stronger’ tagline serves true for IJM Land as one of the 10 local developers who was honoured the “All-Star Award – Top Ranked Developers of the Year” at the prestigious StarProperty.my Awards 2017, where Seremban 2 township bagged the top award under the Family-Friendly category this year.

For the third year in a row, funds raised from the IJM Land Half Marathon 2017 were channelled towards two remarkable local charities, namely the Pertubuhan Hospice Negeri Sembilan (Hospice) and Malaysia Lysosomal Diseases Association (MLDA). IJM Land recognises the crucial roles in which each of these unsung heroes play, in improving the quality of life for less fortunate members of the community.

Through IJM Land Half Marathon, IJM Land has dedicated to use the annual event as a platform for awareness of social and health causes, in bringing people together to run for a good cause and for health. In the spirit of health consciousness, the event also provided - through its medical partner Columbia Asia Hospital Seremban - selected health screenings for runners and visitors to the race.

“At IJM Land Half Marathon 2017, not only do we want to establish a relationship with the community in venturing a lifelong journey together, we also want to create an opportunity for them to help those in need, in supporting the efforts of these two organisations in a meaningful way through (or fuelled by) their common passion for running and keeping fit,” added Mr Edward.

IJM Land Half Marathon involves a 21KM Half Marathon category and two 10KM runs – one for adults aged 18 years and above and another for junior aged 12 years and above. This coveted run also announced the fastest man and woman of the race, who will be in the running to receive the grand IJM Land Half Marathon Challenge Trophy. With the objective of celebrating the runners’ greatest running moments, the unique Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the man and woman who come out tops in their respective categories for three consecutive years, with 2017 being its second year.

All runners who have completed the race regardless of their category took home goodie bags with exciting gifts from Platinum Sponsor, Yakult and other sponsors; along with a custom-made Finisher Medal and certificate. Lucrative lucky draw prizes worth more than RM15,000 were also up for grabs, and runners who completed the 21KM race also received a custom-made Ultron Micro-dry Finisher Tee.

The carnival-like atmosphere was further enhanced with plenty of free popcorn, cotton candy, ice-cream, balloon clowns and much, much more. Visitors and participants were torn for choice with the various other activities on the day of the race, including Yakult’s popular instant print photo booth, where visitors were eager to snap a picture with well-known Malaysian celebrity and Yakult’s ambassador, Jack Lim. Befrienders Seremban also attended on race day to provide support, encouragement and companionship to lonely or emotionally distressed people.

Silverman Duathlon 2017 - Race Report

Experience shared by Wong Chin Chun

Silverman Dualthon was a 11km run 61km bike and 11km run event held at Marina Island, Pangkor. The race kit collection was fairly easy. Participant could collect a week earlier at Amnig Concept Store at Petaling Jaya or opt to mini race expo on the eve of the race day. There were plenty of choices for accommodation with special package such as Rockbund Fishing Chalet (1.7km from Marina Hall) and Marina Island Resort; Hotel (just beside the Marina Hall).

The bike check-in started at 4.45am, but there was no crew or bicycle specialist to inspect the bike and helmet prior to check-in as mentioned in the Guide Book. Proper signage along the rack make it easier for participant to locate their spot. Somehow, the gap between rows were not consistently placed. The race started at 7am after the warming up session. The weather was nice and chilling (average 240C) for the running leg. Water stations and Power Roots were abundance for participants to grab a drink. There was also aid station with Salonpas spray for those who experienced muscles tightness. The view along the run especially at Teluk Batik was fantastic, but the last 1km run with long U turn in the Marina Island was mental torturing.

Going into the transition area after 10.5km run was relatively easy as there were plenty of volunteers directing the traffic. The bike route consists of three u-turn with water stations just after the u-turn. The bike route was over distanced by around 5km, total up approximately 66km with around 398m elevation gain. It was a flat route with slight climb at the bridge areas. The pavement condition before and after the bridges were quite bad with potholes and rough surface which might pose danger to fast paced cyclists. Traffic was well managed by the organizer and traffic polices. Participants were advised to study the maps before the race or they might not aware that they need to complete three U-turn for the bike route. I did not realize any distance markers during the bike leg but the water stations and U-turn can be used as a distance gauge.

After the bike leg, another 10.5km run awaiting. Basically, it is the same route as the 1st run but with exclusion of the last water station at kilometer 9. Running pass kampung area where kids coming out and giving high-five were a pleasant memory. Almost all participant got the chance to cross the finishing line with the volunteer holding the finishing tape. It was a great feeling because usually only top finisher will get such privilege. There are plenty of food and drinks after race, for example banana, Power Roots, cendol, nasi lemak, fried bee hoon and etc. Somehow, no energy gel was distributed for this long endurance race.

As a conclusion, it was a great event with fantastic view for running and cycling. It will be better if the local authority can improve the road condition for the cycling route. The holidays packages were great for those coming from far to take this opportunity as a competition plus vacation outing.

Smart Tunnel Run 2017 - Top 10 Results

Date: 30 Jul 2017
Distance: 12km

First Smart Tunnel run was held on 2007 and this year it is organized by Jabatan Pengairan and Saliran to commemorate 10 years anniversary of the dual purpose tunnel - a double deck tunnel road and also a flood mitigation structure.

1600 runners took this opportunity to experience the atmosphere and run in the tunnel which majority felt it was hot and breezeless. The event went smoothly with men open flagged off at 6:30am and other categories flagged off after 15 minutes.

Runners to run 9km+ inside the tunnel and it was a tough challenge, running in a hot and enclosed environment, left only with tunnel vision and it was hard to breathe. Many runners should be happy when they saw the light at the end of the tunnel. The faster runner is Mr. Siva with the timing of 40:41 minutes.

Medal design is awesome and creative, featuring spinning tunnel drill head and accompany by a beautiful lanyard. Many sponsors supported this event and prize presentation was running smoothly and efficiently.
